AFLW Game Day on My Period
real experiences from my mimi users
We invited a group of my mimi menstrual disc users to share their honest stories - and they did, openly and generously. These guest writers offer real-world insights based on their personal experiences. The stories shared here are genuine, covering the positives, the challenges, and everything in between. Last week was one of those games I’ll never forget - St Kilda vs The Blues. Big crowd, big pressure. We’d beaten Collingwood the week before - our fifth consecutive win - and of course, my period decided to show up the morning of the match.
I used to dread that timing. Playing footy on your period is something most people never see - but every female athlete knows how much it can throw you off. You’re expected to hit tackles, run full-tilt, and back up again the next day like nothing’s happening inside your body.
For years, I relied on tampons and liners. They worked - until they didn’t. Training sessions became a mental game of distraction: worrying about leaks, adjusting layers, and trying to act like I was fine when I wasn’t.
This season, I decided to try something different.
Finding comfort that actually keeps up
A teammate mentioned my mimi during pre-season. I’d never tried a menstrual disc before - honestly, I wasn’t even sure how they worked. But after reading the how it works guide and giving it a go, it slowly became part of my routine.
It took a couple of tries to get used to, but once I did, it felt like such a relief. The disc stayed put through sprints, tackles, and recovery drills. No leaks, no discomfort, no second-guessing.
AFLW game day confidence
Running out against The Blues, I felt completely focused. No background worry, no double-checking in the changerooms - just game mode.
That day, St Kilda came away with the win, but for me, it felt like a personal one too. I didn’t have to think about my period once during four quarters of hard footy. That kind of freedom is something I wish I’d known about from my first season.
Talking about it matters
Periods are still something we don’t talk about enough in women’s sport. But they’re part of our reality - and managing them shouldn’t mean compromising how we play.
For me, finding something that works has made all the difference. It’s simple, reusable, and easy to clean - and that peace of mind lets me just focus on the game.
If you’ve ever felt held back by your period - whether it’s training, travel or just everyday life - you’ll understand how big a difference small changes can make.
