Travelling with your period? I used to dread it.
For years, I thought I had only two options when it came to managing my period on holidays or work trips. Either pack way too many tampons and pads and hope for the best, or cross my fingers that my period wouldn’t start while I was away. Neither worked. Tampons dried me out and were unreliable on long-haul flights. Pads? Bulky, sweaty and uncomfortable, especially in hot climates or long sightseeing days. And public toilets? Forget it. Finding one that’s clean, private, and actually has a bin? Nearly impossible. My period basically ran the show whenever I travelled.
how i found my mimi and why i hesitated at first
After yet another frustrating business trip, a friend mentioned menstrual discs. She talked about wearing one for up to 12 hours, even overnight, and not worrying about leaks or discomfort. I’ll be honest, I was nervous. A disc? Inside me? For that long? It sounded intense. Would I even be able to insert it properly? What if it leaked mid-flight? Still, I was curious enough to give it a go. Before my next trip, a two-week adventure in Japan, I ordered my mimi. Worst case, I figured I could always go back to my tampon-stuffing ways.
my first experience travelling with my mimi
I decided to jump right in on travel day. Nine-hour flight, layover, trains, what a perfect test. Inserting it was surprisingly easy. The disc folded smoothly, and the little loop tab gave me confidence that I wouldn’t be stuck later. Once it was in, I forgot about it. I did use a pad, just in case it leaked. Seriously. During the flight? Nothing. Through security? No issues. While running to catch a connecting flight, I checked my pad, still no leaks. By the time I removed it that evening at my hotel, I actually said out loud: "Wow - that worked." I was genuinely impressed.
travelling became stress-free and simple
As the days went on, my mimi kept proving itself. Long sightseeing days? I didn’t have to even think about bathroom breaks. Overnight? Slept right through without pads or backups. I went hiking, shopping, even visited a traditional onsen on a lighter day. For the first time ever while travelling on my period and I wasn’t planning my day around it. In fact, I often forgot I even had my period. That, for me, was huge.
unexpected benefits - lighter bags and less waste
Another bonus I didn’t expect? Space. No extra pads. No emergency tampons. No "just in case" stash. My luggage was lighter. Plus, I wasn’t creating waste every single day. Knowing I was travelling a little greener felt really good.
why i’ll never travel without my mimi again
Before using my mimi, my period ruled my trips. I was always counting bathrooms, carrying supplies, and stressing about leaks. Now? Total freedom. My period is still there, but it’s in the background, where it should be. I can’t believe I ever travelled without it. Seriously, I’m never going back to overpacking tampons and pads again.
