Victorian government to provide free period products at over 20 major public venues

The Victorian Government has launched a $23 million program to provide free disposable period products - including tampons and pads - at over 20 major public venues across Melbourne and regional Victoria. The initiative includes key locations such as the Royal Botanic Gardens, Melbourne Museum, State Library of Victoria, South Melbourne Market, and even sports venues like Rod Laver Arena and the State Netball & Hockey Centre.

This rollout builds on an earlier pilot that installed smart vending machines across public libraries, TAFEs, hospitals, and cultural institutions starting in late 2024. Since then, more than 90,000 free product packs have been dispensed, helping thousands of Victorians manage their periods with dignity.

Over the next year, the state will install 1,500 period product dispensers across up to 700 venues. The machines feature touchscreen access, braille plates, LED lighting, and automatic stock monitoring - ensuring consistent, inclusive access for all who menstruate. This program tackles both cost-of-living pressures and the stigma still associated with menstruation in public spaces.

According to the Victorian Government, one in five women and girls have experienced period poverty - struggling to afford products at some point. Minister for Women Natalie Hutchins noted that the program is about making sure no one misses work, school, or sport just because of their period.

What About Reusables Period Products?

While access to free tampons and pads is a major step forward, it’s also a good time to consider reusable alternatives like the my mimi menstrual disc. Made from medical-grade silicone, the disc offers up to up to 12 hours of leak-free protection, holds more than a tampon, and is designed to last for up to five years. That’s less waste, fewer trips to the store, and an average cost of just 83 cents per month.

Reusable period care options like my mimi also align with sustainability goals by reducing single-use plastic waste - a smart complement to the government’s accessibility initiatives. Whether you're on the go, at work, or exercising, a menstrual disc offers freedom, comfort, and reliability.
